( 2.9 / 57 )In the Advertising Game and Marketing world you need to be creative and have the ability to offer discounts in a unique way that helps drive traffic to your business.
Now....I want to elaborate that in desperate times comes desperate measures. This is one of them. I'm seeing more and more of the "come in and save" and then it's the "gotcha". I believe this is also referred to as bait and switch.
I'm going to have to say this, Sears is one of those people. I get a flyer, scratch and win up to 50% off for the Sears located at the Pen Centre in St. Catharines (ontario). I need a new shirt so my family and I head out to the Sears store. When we get there, we get a scratch and win card. Great! This is amazing. I then see 40% sign on top of the shirts I wanted to buy. This is even better....40% off and then I get another discount when I buy! Wicked. I get to the counter and find out that there is absolutely NO discount at all. No Scratch and Win, not even the 40% sign was applicable. What gives???? I then find out that there is small print on the 40% massive sign in 8pt font that says "Not applicable to items priced with .88 or .97 in it." Are you KIDDING ME! The shirts weren't that much to start with, but when YOU think your getting a deal and then find out that it's only on certain items, that I'm yet to see where the hell these "other" items where located!
Next....my wife and I go for dinner to a nice restaurant in Stoney Creek, Ontario. The Old Powerhouse Restaurant (. We enjoy the dinner and go on our merry way. 3 days later I get a call on my cell phone telling me that Sally Oldfield won the draw. I don't know who Sally is, I say to the girl, but this is my cell phone number and my name is Oldfield. How did you get my name. The girls proceeds to tell me that she drew it from a ballot that my wife entered. Let me say this, my wife's name is Shelley not Sally. It was a $10 gift certificate for Mary Kay and some make over. I then said I would ask my wife.....when I informed her she was dumbfounded as she never entered a ballet and further where did they get our information? This was where it gets interesting. We cal the restaurant and ask for the Manager with respects to our information being given away. We were told there was a ballot box put there by a 3rd party for prizes to be won. The sticky part to this whole thing was that we asked for the ballot (that we apparently filled in, along with the rules be sent to us). They sent them, and sure enough. It was my number, and Sally Oldfield was the name. It was then thought by the manager that someone looked at the reservation list and entered our name into the ballot box! WHAT!!!! Geesh....i guess they could take my credit card now and share that with any 3rd party as well.
THE BALLOT THAT MY WIFE APPARENTLY FILLED IN WITH HER WRONG NAME!!The moral of this story, watch who you give your information to. It's gold, and people are willing to do anything for it. This situation with the restaurant isn't over for us either. I'm doing some research into the possible "selling" of confidential information to 3rd party, which is illegal in Canada and the USA without prior consent by the person.
Discounts are awesome, just be very careful!

( 3.1 / 69 )I'm making this suggestion to everyone out there that has a small business, mid size business and a large business. The thing that I'm finding interesting here is that we are all impacted in some way from the economy right now in Canada and the USA.
So, where do we all save to make it through to 2010 (as the Canadian government is claiming we'll need to get to). I have made some dramatic cost savings to our company and I have to say it's making a difference...
* Benefits - Watch what you spend. If you have a small group of people that are young, don't go all crazy with the benefits and make sure you shop around. I was paying $800 when we started and then it jumped to $2000. I've decided to shop around, but to do this you need to get permission from the broker to do this with other insurance companies. Therefore, your stuck. ie. The insurance companies will only deal with one broker. Suggestion: Talk to your staff and get everyone on the same page. Then fire your broker and the insurance company. Your then a free agent. Now you can go to anyone and easily get quotes. And don't give up until you get the best for the staff with the price and the plan!
* Cell Phones - I was with Rogers for 9 years. I shopped around and Telus finally came to me with a deal. They bought out my contract and I'm saving about $1500 a month. Yes, that's $18,000 a year in savings. Not small but huge. I'm also getting more value with our phones including blackberry (free) and emails as part of the package.
* Office Phones - I know this is going to sound hard to believe, but I have finally found the golden egg for savings. I've updated our phones in the office to a true VOIP. The company is Cheepnet. There is 1 time cost of the phones, installation and training. Then....that's it. No more phone line costs per month. yep...If your a small business you were spending about $200 - $300 a month in long distance. Gone. The cost for the phones is about $4800 plus the $2000 in cancellation for the current phone agreement. It will pay for it self in 27 months. www.cheapnet.ca - check it out!
* Internet - DSL by Bell Business is $50-$99 a month. You can find other options, and we did at only $29 a month ($33 with taxes)
* Work-Share. Don't lay off your staff. You can easily adjust your operations cost by applying (Canada Only) to the Work-Share program. http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/epb ... c_ws.shtml
It's a great program (finally one I can support!!!) that allows for the company to off set the costs when you don't have the work. Keeps the people working until you can make up the lost sales. Keeps the Moral up as well.
* Credit Cards - don't pay more than 14%. Even that's ridiculous. I was at one time noticing that the interest rates were 18%-22%. I made a call and asked them to lower the rates. I guess it worked. I'm now paying 5.9% to 11% on the cards.
* Bank rates - watch them. They are the worst. I have a few companies and I'm working with a credit union and TD Bank. I can tell you that it's a pleasure (and cheaper) to work with a credit union. I'm not one for bashing companies, especially in a website, but I have to honesty say that TD Bank is the worst They are not built for handling small business. I highly advise you not to consider doing business with them. Their rates are very high, the quality of service is not what small business needs. I'm happy to answer anyones questions and challenges. adam@fpm3.com
More savings coming up.....if you have any suggestions that I might be missing. let me know!

( 3 / 55 )Hope you guys remember the ladies out there. It's Valentines Day and you might want to remember to get the card for your special someone.
As well, in Ontario Canada we have an amazing holiday called Family Day. This was a holiday designated by the Ontario Liberals, that is a stat holiday and was chosen without the voting people choice.
Do I agree with a Holiday. No. This is just another example how Dalton McGuinty can't run the politics in this province and works everyday to help shut down this province.
I'm off my soap box.
Have a great Family day...worrying if you have a job and if you can pay your bills!
